South Sudan Meteorological Services (SSMS) has released its March to May (MAM) 2026 Seasonal Forecast, based on the Greater Horn of Africa regional consensus outlook developed with ICPAC, National Meteorological and Hydrological Services, World Meteorological Organization and partners, and formally issued during the 72nd Greater Horn of Africa Climate Outlook Forum (GHACOF 72) (statement released 27 January 2026).

Key highlights for South Sudan (MAM 2026):

  • Rainfall: Higher likelihood of above-average rainfall (55%) over parts of the south (including areas of Central & Eastern Equatoria and northern Lakes), while many other southern/central areas have near-normal to normal rainfall probabilities (40–45%). Conditions are expected to remain climatologically drier in the far north, with a generally normal onset of rains in many areas.
  • Temperature: Warmer-than-average temperatures are expected across most of the country, with higher probabilities in some far north-eastern and north-western areas.
